Thiruvenkadu Swedharanyeswarar Temple, One of the Navagraha Temples for Budha Bhagwan – The Planet Mercury is located In Sirkazhi of Nagappattinam District and about 15 KM from Vaitheeswaran Koil. Presiding Deity is Swedharanyeswarar along with HIS consort Goddess Brahma Vidyambal. There are three holy tanks here in this temple named as Agni Theertham, Surya Theertham and Chandra Theertham. Thiruvenkadu - The Temple for Progeny - Once there was a great saivite named Acchyuta Kalappalar lived in Tiruppennakatam, who was gifted with all material blessings but not a child. One day the Lord appeared in his dreams and asked him to go to Thiruvenkadu with his spouse and carry out the worship and pray towards Swedharanyeswarar. While the Kalappalar was performing the worship, the Lord of Thiruvenkadu told him in his dream that though he had not the good fortune to havea child in that birth, because of his implicit faith in the utterings of Sambandar, he would be granted a child even like the saint himself. The chieftain finished his vow of worship and returned to his native place. In course of time a male child was born. He was none other than Meykandar The Great pet who wrote Sivagnanabotham.

Once a sage by the name Swethaketu is said to have been saved from the clutches of death by the grace of Lord Shiva here , as Markandeya in Thirukkadavur. Tthere is a shrine for Meykandar – The Author of Sivagnanabotham here on the banks of the Agni Theertham. It is also believed that Shiva took the fierce Aghoramurthy form, to vanquish the demon Maruttuvan, to whom he had given his Shoolam - which he had misused. There are several shrines of significance here in this temple which includes Durgai and Kali. The idols of Natarajar here is of great beauty. Worshipping to Aghoramurthy - Shiva's fiery form, also known as Veerabhadrar is said to be of significance on Sunday nights. The Aalamaram here is referred to as Akshayavadam – The Infinite one. It is believed that the Somakundam and Suryakundam referred to in Silappatikaaram refer to these tanks. Vilvam and Konrai are the other stala vrikshams here. Offering Green Cloths and Full Green Moong Dhall to Budhan here is auspecious. Thiruvenkadu means the sacred white forest. This is also called Adhi Chidambaram and the Chidambara Rahasyam is also here. As seen in Chidambaram, Vishnu is near Nataraja. Special worship services are offered to Natarajar and the associated Spatikalingam, as in Chidambaram.
